Wenger: Arsenal Close To Arshavin Signing
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is still confident that Russian International Andrei Arshavin will sign for the Premier League club this month from Zenit St Petersburg, having already had a £10million offer for the playmaker turned down by the Russian side.
27-year-old Arshavin has been heavily tipped for a move to the Emirates Stadium from Zenit, with the EURO 2008 star declaring recently that he would like to wear the No10 shirt at the North London club, which is currently occupied by William Gallas.
Wenger is expected to ask the Arsenal board to make an improved offer for Arshavin this week as he looks to fill the void in the Arsenal midfield left by injured captain Cesc Fabregas. Zenit are understood to want in the region of £20million for Arshavin, with the Gunners chief conceding that although a deal is far from finalised he is hopeful of completing the capture of the Russian schemer before the transfer window closes.
“We are not close to signing anybody, but we know what we want to do,” said Wenger.
“We are not close to making a signing today, so we have no new news. We are in negotiations but we want to respect our principles.
“I am very hopeful. Days? Yes, because the transfer window will close and we have already crossed halfway. It will be days. But, if it doesn't happen then it doesn't happen.
“We want to continue to improve and focus on what we can improve here with the players we have.”
